What is a ‘slip disc’?

Intervertebral disc is the fibrous cartilage pads that lie between the spinal vertebrae made up of two parts: a jelly-like center (the nucleus pulposus) that loses moisture with age, and a tough outer ring (the annulus fibrosus) that can split with age or injury.

slip disc occurs when the disc’s jelly-like centre ruptures the tough, fibrous outer ring (the annulus fibrosus) come out into the spinal canal and oozing through small openings in between the vertebrae, where nerves come out from the spinal column. It can happen in neck and back.

What is spondilitis?

It is actually a misnomer; it should better be termed as spondylosis. It means wear and tear of spine due to age and lifestyle. Please refer to Common Topics on home page.

What is scoliosis ?

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature or deviation (right or left) of the spine more than 10, and associated with rotation of vertebra. It can happen most commonly in adolescent girls. Though, Pre-school children, adults or aged people may also get affected. Some even have birth defects of spine which may lead to scoliosis .

Will I have pain after spine surgery?

Due to use of modern anesthesia techniques and pain medications most patients have minimal pain following a spine surgery .

Am I a candidate for minimally invasive spine surgery?

Minimally invasive spine surgery continues to grow and is becoming applicable to many newer conditions. Many spine surgeries are now treatable with some types of minimally invasive surgery. However, there are certain conditions that require standard open operative treatment. These are high-degree scoliosis, high grade spondylolisthesis, spinal tumors and some cases of spinal trauma and infections .

The best options should be individually decided for each patient according to the patient’s diagnosis and overall patient condition .

How much is the risk of spine surgery?

No surgery is guaranteed and all surgeries have risks associated with it. This is why the expected result is individualized for each patients.
